Ode on St Cecilia’s Day

Ensemble Gombert & Accademia Arcadia, directed by John O’Donnell

With soloists Elspeth Bawden, Christopher Roache, Christopher Watson & Jeremy Kleeman

In Purcell’s day, St Cecilia, patron saint of music, was celebrated in London with a new work commissioned annually. Perhaps the greatest of all these works is Purcell’s 1692 setting of poetry by Nicholas Brady commencing Hail! Bright Cecilia, and featuring the superb alto solo ’Tis Nature’s Voice, sung in the original performance by Purcell himself.

Ensemble Gombert is Melbourne’s outstanding chamber choir, noted for its pure intonation and historic approach to choral sound and style. Named after Nicolas Gombert (c. 1495 – c. 1560), the Ensemble specialises in a cappella performance of Franco-Flemish music of the High Renaissance.

Accademia Arcadia is a Baroque chamber ensemble of high originality. Known simply as Arcadia, this company was formed by Jacqueline Ogeil in 2001 to explore the trio sonata, cantata, early opera, and grand liturgical music genres.
