Ken Murray, solo guitar

Spanish Connections highlights some of the diverse influences which have defined the Spanish guitar over the past century. In the early 20th century, guitarists Miguel Llobet and Andrés Segovia gained global fame, expanding the instrument’s repertoire and demonstrating its potential for concert performance. Spanish composers such as Manuel de Falla drew inspiration from Baroque musicians such as Gaspar Sanz and Domenico Scarlatti.
This program opens with works by Sanz, and Scarlatti’s Sonata K208 arranged for guitar. Manuel de Falla’s Homenaje a Debussy (1920) redefined guitar composition. Welsh composer Stephen Goss composed Hiraeth (2020) as a prelude to Homenaje, blending influences from Debussy and Falla. Flamenco guitarist and composer Angel Barrios contributed richly to the guitar’s repertoire, and Improvisación! reflects the style of Tárrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra. The program concludes with Falla’s vibrant Farruca from The Three-Cornered Hat.
Ken Murray has forged a distinctive career as a guitarist, seamlessly blending elements of performance, composition, teaching, and research. His focus encompasses a dedication to showcasing and recording Spanish music from the early 20th century, collaborating extensively with contemporary composers, and actively engaging in the performance of Brazilian and South American musical genres.
