Scotch College Symphony Orchestra
The Scotch College Symphony Orchestra is the most senior of the large
ensembles at Scotch, and has a long reputation for playing major works of the
orchestral repertoire.
The orchestra’s main performances take place in May (as part of the Autumn
Concert Season), its Winter Concert in June, the Foundation Day Concert at
Hamer Hall in late August, and the Summer Prom concert in December.
The orchestra will usually accompany at least 5 fully rehearsed concertos each year, and often more if there is a tour. Additional concerts and engagements are often added to the orchestra’s calendar.
The orchestra tours overseas, usually every two years. Recent trips have
included England, France, Belgium, Spain, America, China and South East Asia.
Performances often take place in major public venues, generally as part of an
existing concert series presented by the venue in question. It also performs at
other schools with strong music traditions, and the boys always enjoying
meeting other like-minded young musicians from other nations.
The boys work hard to achieve their place in the orchestra, and cherish the
opportunity to perform great music from the orchestral repertoire.
Max Gillies, narrator
Max has had a distinguished career on stage and television showing a major propensity for political satire. He has recorded a number of stories for children, including Paul Jennings’ Unreal, Unmentionable and Unbearable. He has narrated a verse-enhanced performance of Carnival of the Animals with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in his persona as Bob Hawke, and today will be his second outing as himself telling the story of Peter and the Wolf.
